Terrific article, Laurie. Thanks for sharing it! Tracking stats can help you decide not only which types of marketing work well, but also which information is most needed and what your readers might like to see next.

I use Google Analytics to track website stats, and it helped me decide which of my book projects to put on the front burner and which to let simmer a little longer. People have a need for certain types of information, and if they're coming to my site looking for it, then it may be something I should provide.

Congratulations, I applaud you for being able not to focus on the bottom line and being able to accept low earnings for the year. I see that you put a lot of your effort into marketing your book. I have recently co-authored a book and have found that the amount of time and effort that needs to be spent on marketing the book is equal to or even in excess to the amount of time that was devoted to the writing. The book deals with Sleep, which, I'm sure you know, is a hot topic, as estimates in the range of 1/3 of the adult population in the country has problems getting the sleep they need. The book offers some good natural solutions and ways to deal with sleep issues.

One of the biggest reasons self-publishing has grown as quickly as it has is that it absolutely can be profitable. Once you have several books out, you may even make a full-time income from them (I do).

It's possible to recoup publishing costs even faster if you establish a small publishing company and use freelance editors and graphic artists to help you bring your book to market.

Finally, remember to always post a link when you write about your book so that others will know where to find it: http://naiwe.com/bookstore/index.php . I'm sure that someone in your reading audience needs it now!

Good thoughts, Laurie. I need occasional work breaks too, though I haven't had a significant one for several years. I can hardly remember how nice it is to take sustained time away from the daily routine.

I take mini-breaks when I need to back away and do some long-range planning or strategic thinking, or draft a book. Oddly, I can do endless editing and revisions at home with everything going on, but the initial draft is best created in silence and calm. You've reminded me that I need to schedule that in!
